Shooting for gold

Dreaming of a Olympic medal

G.Subash Chandra
Bellary:
Even though without facilities she has achieved a lot. With the limited resources in her hand C. Rekha had made her mark in Shooting Arena and had promised of going great guns, if provided with facilites and sponsors.

With big dreams in her boutique Rekha is still hovering to get sponsors. Hailing from a family of agrarian community, she got interest in the shooting when she was an under officer at National Cadet Corps (NCC). As she has finished the course with NCC she is clueless at the moment.

At this juncture she is in need of a Guide and a Guru who can take this 19 year old lass towards achieveing her dreams of winning Medal in Olympics. A student of Government Polytechnic College Bellary, Rekha is dreaming of making it big and hopes that she get support at the right time.

Coming from Agrarian Background Rekha has achieved a lot from the limited resources she had at her disposal and won several medals to her credit. With good credentials as a Markswoman, she is looking for a big company.

Apart from this she had also won bronze medal at Mavalankar Shooting Championship in 2006-07 at Asansol in West Bengal, 11th Position in Indore (MP) all in the three position event. But her persistent training reaped rewards at Agra leg of Mavalankar Shooting Championship in 2007-08 and obtained third position. After this there was no look back for her as she had a dream run at the Ahemedabad National Junior Shooting Championship where she bagged Gold Medal in Junior catagory.

She along with her NCC mates Lajja Goswami and K.C. Hema achieved the same. Immediately after the completition of the junior event they took part in the senior event where they settled for a bronze.

Earlier as an NCC cadet she had the access of the Army shooting range at Sainik School Bijapur, now after the completition of 3 years with NCC she had no other option to train. As an avid shooter, she is looking for other options to train.

When asked about her training at the Shooting Range at Hyderabad University's Campus, Rekha disagreed and said, "if i want to achieve anything it should be from Karnataka only, i can't even dream of participation from other state".

Even though after getting these accolades, the Bellary girl couldn't get sponsors to continue with the sport, she is onlooking for sponsors who can bail out her from the financial problems. As the city of Bellary nor the entire north Karnataka has a shooting range, Rekha has to train at Bangalore only, for which she needs support. The Gun which she uses for the championship is costing 3.5 Lakhs and at present it is impossible for her to purchase.

Her interested in continuing with the sport has made her to move to Bangalore and have the access of the SAI shooting range. Department of Youth Affairs and Sports and SAK should come out to support her in this regard and provide with hostel facilities and scholarship to train.
She also congratulates Subedhar Kushalappa under whom she learnt the basics of shooting and also Commanding Officer of NCC Mr. S. Mohan for their perennial support.

Even though after repeated requests from NCC and personally, there is no repaly from anyone she tells palely.

Olympic Dreams: Rekha dreams of becoming Olympian and winning a medal in the greatest sporting extravaganza.

Exchanging views with Deccan Herald Rekha said "Her immediate aim is to get to Bangalore and from there don the National colours".

Modrenising of Weapons: The weapons and Ammunition presently used in the state are old and outmoded one, hence this issue should be addressed urgently, as this sport is taken up by more number of persons.

Karnataka State Rifle Association and Government should take immediate steps for purchasing new arms and ammunition.

Environment

Collapsing stones of Jog

Bangalore:

The Sheen of Jog is silently vanishing, as the plans of development is going on a snail's pace. An average tourist has to face lot of hardships if he has to see this magnificient falls, once termed a paradise.

According to environmentalists, it is said that due to the onstruction work done near AB site, the boulders in the course of the falls are under continous threat of collapse in a big way. Which will in turn not only discourage the tourists, but also bring brunt on the the revenue from the industry.

Having abundant resources to attract tourists, Jog, once was the favourite destination for those who visited the country. Gradually, this has come to a griding halt. Tourism department which is striving hard to save this historic site should act expeditiously for the development and conservation of the site is what the locals say. Geologists are of opinion that, even though the blasts are done far from the site, the effect will be on the rocks and boulders that are on the course of Jog Falls, as it creates cracks and fissures, which in turn lead to the growth of plants and aggravate the gaps leading to the collapse in future.

Literary critic and noted writer Na Dsouza, who is undertaking a massive campaign to save Jog said, 'Even though after repeated requests to the various Government departments, stating that the work done on the site being poor, the response is mediocre, resulting in the number of tourists being eroded'.

Commenting on the maintanence of the museum, which consists of Masti and Veeragallu that were unearthed during the construction of Linganamakki Dam, D'souza said that 'it is not maintained well, the inscriptions of historical importance has been waywardly thrown, which shows how serious we are on preserving'.

But, the Chief Engineer of KPC project at Jog N Ramaiah has a different view on the collapse of rocks in the site. According to him ‘disintegration of rocks and boulders in the site of falls is a natural phenomenon, and not due to the construction work on the site'.

He also said that till now KPC has not recieved any complaints on this issue, when questioned about the future consequences, Ramaiah clarified that the new project is far away from the site and will have no impact on the falls.

The falls which once had about 18 different spots to view, presently has not got even one to view due to the ill maintainence of various Government departments.

Win Win Sports

Win Win Sports

“Talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence wins championships.” This inspiring quote of the Basketball great Michael Jordan holds good in case of the development of sports infrastructure in rural Karnataka, at last thanks for the Department of Youth Services and Sports (DYSS) for its initiative in setting up of Stadia facilities in the untrodden areas.

It’s a win-win situation for the sports enthusiasts of the state, at last, sports has received a new dimension with improvement of infrastructure. After a prolong delay, The Government has created 63 Taluk Stadiums which are almost on the final stage. With this development innumerable youth and children will be benefited.

Having facility of hosting various sports, they will act as ancillary units for DYSS youth hostels in future. Host of Multi sporting activities including Athletics, Football, Basketball, Volleyball, Throwball, Netball, and Handball can be played in one area is what the Department of Youth Services and Sports believe.

Out of the grant of Rs. 100 crores sanctioned by 12th finance commission to be spent over a period of four years, the sanctioned first instalment has been successfully utilised. Enthused by the initial success, DYSS has started working aggressively for speeding up
of work in other parts of the state.

This has come at the moment when interest in sports in the state is on decline. The addition to the existing infrastructure will work as life-blood for the development of various games in the interiors of Karnataka. It is known that in the past the latent talent of sports persons in rural areas had not been identified due to the lack of infrastructure.

The work of these stadiums started a decade ago and took abundant time to finish. Some of them even went to the extent of increase in the budgetary allocation. And rest finished in the stipulated amount.

Maintenance Mania: The big question of maintenance is now haunting the department officials, as it is not easy to look after the entire affairs from Bangalore. Rubbing the wounds is the glaring fact that not even one taluk has got a officer who can look after the affairs. Even before last year some districts didn't have district youth officers, but of late thanks to the KPSC who in the recruitment of Gazetted Probationers appointed some officers as assistant directors which has over come some drawback.

Speaking to Deccan Herald Commissioner of DYSS Mr Amar Kumar Pandey said that department has also got the idea of starting of Centre's of Excellence in Various sports at district level. The programme is on full swing and very shortly this will come in to existence. He also reiterated that with the support of locals achieving big goals is not
an issue.

For the purpose of public, the department is planning to make some facilities in the stadia’s including walking path, Multi Gym's and etc.

Already 37 full-fledged multi-gym's are working in the state of which the usage is maximum. He also said that there are plans for increasing the number of multi-gyms in the state, as people are growing health concisious, a final decision will be taken after a meeting with concerned Mr Pandey said.

Coaching to Administration:
Due to shortfall of the sports officers in district and complete absence of taluk level officers the department at the moment has given additional responsibilities to the coaches to manage the affairs of the Youth Services and Sports, which had resulted in they concentration on the game. This has been affecting the training of the young sportspersons. The DYSS has submitted requests to the Government to appoint officers at the district and also revive the Taluk Level officer's post.

Several aspects including recruitment of new coaches (after the approval of Government) which gives boost to the sports in state is not on priority list of DYSS.

Attraction Important:
On the issue of attracting kids and youths to the stadiums in rural areas, Commissioner DYSS said that it is the duty of local sports organisations, educational institutions and youth organisations of that area to take care of this. He also said that once the construction is completed they will be handed over to the Stadium management committee, which will take care of the same.

He also said that Government will act as a nodal agency and supports, but at last it is the institutions to make maximum utilisation of the facilities provided to them.

Empowering camps

Empowering camps

Sounding boards, splashing water, bouncing balls, huge hits, Fiery Smashes, Accurate throws… come summer, holidays bring bang and a fresh lease of life for the sports in the garden city. Enthused by the buoyant scenario, children start rushing to the ground to learn the game.

Yes, this is the scene that one can come across during every summer. As the final exams are over, bored by the continuous non-stop studies they want to fly in sky like free birds, enjoy the life they lost during the entire year. These camps act as stimulant for the exhausted minds.

There is a plethora of options available to keep the "generation next" occupied during summer. Parents are getting tired of the generic stuff that most camps have been offering. They want more comprehensive courses taught by best inbreed professionals. In order to protect their children from gluing to television and computer games during summer vacation. That’s why sports for children is preferred, that too under good qualified professionals.

Sports not only recreate children, but also induce confidence among them to achieve further more in their life. As this is the period to mould young, a right coaching will give way for the future sports persons who can flutter the national flag with rare guts. Camp generally starts in April runs through till the end May, thereby helping out kids to learn new tactics in different sports and games.

Kids should not only take these camps serious, but also treat this as a spring board for their future endeavors. As this is the age of achievement. A minor mistake at this juncture may lead to innumerable problems; hence, kids should learn technicalities of the game thoroughly and master the game. Also they should give importance for stretch exercises along with thrust being given to athletism, as this will play a vital role in the development in future.

At the end it is the duty of the parents to admit their children with recognised coaches, who have proven track record in the past.

Points to be noted:

1) Identify in which sports your kid is interested.
2) Make sure, the coaching place is in the vicinity of your residence.
3) Find out right coach, who has proven track record in the past.
